Five Mistakes To Avoid After A Car Accident

If this is the first time you have been injured in a car accident, you may not be sure what steps you need to take to protect your rights. That inexperience can be costly. You could end up incurring significant medical and other expenses without the ability to seek compensation.

Read about the five mistakes many people make after a car accident and why you should avoid them.

1. Failing to obtain medical care. Some people are more concerned about vehicle damage than they are about damage to their body. If you are feeling pain after an accident, seek immediate medical attention and follow your doctor's treatment plan for your recovery. Attempting to tough out an injury can lead to a chronic condition. Furthermore, the insurance company responsible for paying your bills sill not believe you are injured if you don't seek treatment.

2. Making a recorded statement. The insurance company of the other driver will ask you to make a recorded statement. You should not do this without legal advice. You could end up making statements that damage your case and prevent you from recovering compensation.

3. Accepting a settlement offer. The insurance company may offer an immediate settlement in exchange for you signing a release form. Unfortunately, once you sign the release, you will be barred from seeking additional compensation, even if your injuries turn out to be more serious than you first thought.

4. Discontinuing medical treatment. Some people discontinue medical treatment because the doctor visits are expensive and they don't feel they are getting better. However, if you stop treatment, the responsible insurance company will claim you are no longer injured.

5. Not seeking legal advice. Most personal injury lawyers offer a free initial consultation to explain your rights and answer your questions. You are not under any obligation to hire the lawyer after your consultation.

The law firm of Perrotta & Cahn, Attorneys at Law in Cartersville offers a free initial consultation to people in the Atlanta Metro area and northern Georgia who have been injured in a car accident.
